Uncover the fascinating history and science behind the marimba with members of Heartland Marimba. This special presentation explores how the instrument produces its distinctive sound, traces its journey from Africa through Central America to the classical music stage, and reveals the surprising Pennsylvania connections behind its history.
Discover how U.S. companies and performers helped introduce the marimba to classical music, and hear the untold stories of the musicians who shaped the instrument’s legacy. Among them is Clair Musser, widely regarded as the “godfather” of the classical marimba, who was born in Manheim, Pennsylvania.
The story continues in Lancaster, where Reg Kehoe performed across the country for nearly 20 years with the Marimba Queens, a popular all-female marimba ensemble based in Lancaster from the 1930s through the 1950s.
Whether you are a longtime marimba enthusiast or simply curious about this remarkable percussion instrument, join Heartland Marimba for an engaging look at marimba history, music, acoustics, and its unique Pennsylvania roots.

"Pennsylvania's Magnificent Marimba Music History" Lecture Performance - MMF Bonus Event
5 Wyomissing Blvd, Wyomissing, PA Oct 13, 2025 6:30 pm Atonement Lutheran Church Sanctuary
Heartland Marimba will present a lecture performance on the major contributions the state of Pennsylvania, in particular the southeast region, has provided for the development of the classical marimba idiom. Clair Omar Musser, The International Marimba Symphony Orchestra, Reg Kehoe and His Marimba Queens, Dorothy Yoder, and the Lancaster Marimba Ensemble are just some of the key figures discussed.
The program showcases a unique and remarkable contribution that a region of Pennsylvania gave to classical music. Thousands of performers and audiences enjoy the classical marimba art form today due to the evolution that happened in the 1920s–1950s, and much of it originated from PA. This is something that is largely unknown and we are beginning to educate people more with programs like this, the Musser Marimba Festival (Oct. 14-18, 2025, Manheim, PA), and other collaborations.
